[...] Principles for a New Media Literacy – Dan Gillmor (Center for Citizen Media) This is a reprint of an essay of the same title, recently published as part of the Media Re:public project at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. This is a very long post but if you’re deeply embedded in this space it’s well worth it to read every word. Some of the meat of the post includes ‘Principles of Media Consumption,’ and ‘Principles of Media Creation.” The author explains with why this all matters and leaves you with this question (and it’s an important one): “Are we ready to take the risk of being activist media users, for the right reasons? A lot rides on the answer.” [...]

Renee, PBS is doing great work, no question. But in a Web world, why are the lesson plans there in PDF?

I'm still not happy with "media literacy" as the term of art in this context, and hope we come up with something better.

Great paper, Dan. You highlight ideas that have been part of the ML mantra for years and add some great new touches. This is a piece we can (and will) use with K-12 teachers nationwide.

But starting the essay with a cheap-shot punch to your allies and supporters is just not nice. You say ML is "QUAINT to the point of irrelevance"? Ouch. We've been debating terms for this concept for 15 years. Everybody and his brother has a different name for it: 'digital literacy,' 'information literacy' and 'cyberliteracy' just to name a few. Thanks for at least using the right term: media literacy.

You claim that media literacy advocates have missed exploring the emerging methods of participation. Another ouch. But it's just plain wrong. Take a look at the PBS Elections project we developed in 2008, showing teachers how they could build civic engagement and media literacy skills through the use of social media tool about the presidential election. It's available at:

Hope you come to Detroit this summer to the National Media Education Conference and make some new friends!
