Why American Newspapers are Dying, Part MMCCDXVI

Editor & Publisher: Many Won’t Run Next Two ‘Opus’ Strips With Sex Joke, Islam Reference. At least 25 of the 200 or so “Opus” client newspapers might not run the Sunday-only comic’s next two episodes, which feature Islamic references and a sex joke.

Puritan prudishness and political cowardice: Now there’s a combination that’s just certain to attract more readers.

American newspapers: Blandify your way to success.

That ought to work particularly well as local markets get more competitive.

Seth: I think you mean the Bloom Picayune. But what a Beacon it was in its day. “Just who are these immoral Americans, and what are they doing?” boy editor Milo Bloom mused, before grabbing a telescope. “Gotta peek in a few of dem windows!”

BTW, where’s Art Linkletter when you need him, to tell us that trackbacks say the darndest things? “The Forbidden Planet International Blog Log” writes above: “I like this observation BB highlighted from Dave Gillmor at the Center for Citizen media Blog…”

You guys are all missing the point, This isn’t about the press being prudish or too “sensitive”. It has everything to do with the press being cowed into self-censorship by implied threats of violence. And the media won’t f#cking admit it. That’s the real tragedy here.
