Conference WiFi, Ever Unreliable

I was overheard at the recent Fortune magazine Brainstorm conference making this observation, which I stand behind:

The next conference I go to that has a consistent WiFi signal will be my first.

The best wifi I’ve encountered at a conference lately was at a hotel where the ballroom happened to sit right on top of a Panera Bread shop with free wi-fi. That worked far better than the conference’s wifi!

I just returned from the National Education Computing Conference (NECC) http://center.uoregon.edu/ISTE/NECC2006/ – 12,000 attendees, 100s of sessions, workshops, presentations, and the WiFi was constant and reliable in every room (San Diego Convention Center).
